Being a child of immigrants and a racialized woman, my life has been a rich tapestry woven with threads of culture, resilience, and a deep-seated commitment to equity. This journey has led me to the Child Welfare Immigration Centre of Excellence (CWICE), where I will continue to champion the cause of equitable child welfare practices.
Growing up in an immigrant household, I was constantly navigating between two worlds and can relate to the many children we work with who have similar experiences to my own. At home, I was immersed in the rich traditions and values of my parents' homeland. Outside, I adapted to the cultural dynamics of a new country. This duality shaped my identity, fostering a deep appreciation for diversity and inclusivity.
As a racialized woman, I faced unique challenges. From subtle microaggressions to overt discrimination, each experience reinforced my resolve to fight for justice and equality. These experiences also provided me with a unique perspective on the systemic barriers that marginalized communities face, fueling my passion for equity work.
My dedication to equity work began early in my career in child welfare, expanded as I took on leadership roles, and extended to my work spanning two provincial ministries in Ontario. Whether it was through community outreach programs, advocacy for policy changes, or supporting marginalized families, I have been driven by the belief that everyone deserves equal opportunities and respect. My work was not just a job but a calling—a commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of those who are often overlooked.
Joining the CWICE team in 2024 has been an incredibly rewarding experience, one filled with a deep sense of gratitude. From the moment I became part of this incredible group, I was struck by the level of expertise and passion each member brings to the table. Every conversation, every interaction, showcases a genuine commitment to excellence and a shared mission to make a meaningful impact.
It's truly inspiring to witness how each team member approaches challenges with creativity and knowledge, always pushing boundaries while maintaining a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect. The energy within CWICE is not just about achieving professional goals but also about supporting each other in personal growth, making it a rare and enriching environment.
I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of a team that not only values expertise but also nurtures passion and purpose in every project we tackle. The collective drive and enthusiasm are contagious, and I’m genuinely excited for what lies ahead, knowing that we’re all working towards something bigger than ourselves.
I am excited to see the next chapter and evolution of CWICE through the National Expansion Project.
In conclusion, my journey to and joining CWICE has been a fulfilling one. It is a testament to the power of resilience, the importance of cultural identity, and the impact of dedicated equity work. As I continue this journey, I remain committed to advocating for the rights and well-being of all children, ensuring that their stories are heard, and their needs are met. Together, we can create a more inclusive and just society for all.
